Top Tips to Fix Picture Not Working in Picture Mode

As far as I can tell from personal experience, the PiP mode issue is primarily caused by an app not supporting this feature (more on this later). In some rare cases, a software bug or bug can also be responsible for the problem. So, if the problem occurs while using a particular app, the problem is most likely related to that app and not the system-wide Picture-in-Picture mode itself. However, here are the best ways to fix Picture-in-Picture mode not working issue.

1. Make Sure You Check The Compatibility Of The App

The first thing you need to make sure is that the application you are using supports the PiP mode feature. It’s entirely up to the app developers to add support for the Picture-in-Picture mode. And if they don’t want their apps to work with Picture-in-Picture functionality, they can choose not to. So make sure you are not dealing with an app that does not support the feature before trying other fixes.

You must have noticed that YouTube is not in the list above. This is because the popular video sharing website does not support the PiP mode of iOS 14. Also, it is unlikely that YouTube will come into play in the near future. Not surprisingly, the video-sharing platform doesn’t support picture-in-picture mode, even in Safari. But don’t worry, there is a reliable trick that lets you use YouTube in picture-in-picture mode in iOS 14.

2. Understand How Picture-in-Picture Works on iPhone

Again, this is not a solution per se. However, most of the time we are not able to use a new feature or make the most of it due to our limited knowledge about it. Therefore, it is convenient to understand the basics of how picture-in-picture mode works on iPhone.

  • Enable Picture-in-Picture Mode in iOS 14

There are multiple ways to enable PiP mode in a compatible app like Netflix or Apple TV. For example, you can Tap the Picture-in-Picture icon (usually located at the top of the app) to trigger Picture-in-Picture mode on your iPhone. Also, you can double tap the video with two fingersSwipe up from the home bar (iPhones with Face ID) or press the home button (iPhones with Touch ID) to enable Picture-in-Picture mode in iOS 14.

  • Use Picture-in-Picture Mode in iOS 14

Depending on your needs, you can easily resize the video and continue multitasking on your iOS device. To enlarge the tiny PiP video, all you have to do is pinch it outward in the floating window. Pinch inward to make it smaller again.

If you want to show and hide the controls, tap the video window. If you want to move the video window, drag it to a different corner of the screen. Drag from the left or right edge of the screen to hide the PiP video window and it will disappear. You can bring it back at any time by tapping the pull tab arrow button.

Tapping or double-tapping the same icon in the upper-right corner of the Scrolling Picture window also allows you to exit or return to full screen. You can also tap the ‘X’ button in the left corner of the Picture-in-Picture window to exit the app.

  • How to Use PiP Mode in Safari on iOS 14

Picture-in-Picture mode in Safari is designed to work with almost any video format. In particular, website developers do not need to make any extra effort to support PiP in Apple’s browser. So, while watching a video in the Safari browser, you can tap the Picture-in-Picture icon or use two finger gestures to trigger Picture in Picture Mode.

Note that some video types, such as those embedded in ads or certain websites, may not work with Safari’s PiP mode. It’s also worth noting that if you want to continue browsing another site while a video is playing, you will need to open a new Safari tab. You can check out other Safari tips and tricks in our detailed guide included here.

  • iPhone Models That Support Picture-in-Picture Mode

As for the device compatibility of Picture-in-Picture feature, it supports all iOS 14 compatible devices including iPhone SE 1/2, iPhone 6s/6s Plus, iPhone 7/7 Plus, iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X, XS, XS. Max, XR, iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max.

3. Turn off/on Picture-in-Picture Mode

A simple trick I would recommend trying to fix PiP mode issues in iOS 14 is to quickly reboot this feature. I mean, you should try turning off/on Picture-in-Picture mode on your iPhone. Most of the time, it helped me solve the Picture-in-Picture mode issue. That’s why I’m counting on that to help you too.

Turn Picture-in-Picture off or on

go to Settings app on your iPhone -> General -> Picture-in-Picture Mode and then turn off the toggle. After that, wait for a while and then turn on the switch.

4. Force Restart Your iPhone

A force restart, aka hard reset, has long been a reliable method of troubleshooting, especially when dealing with various issues. By instinct, I think it would be wise to give it a chance to fix the Picture-in-Picture issue in iOS 14.

Force restart your iPhone

  • On iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone X, 11, and 12: Press and quickly release the volume up button. Next, press and quickly release the volume down button. Next, make sure to hold down the side button until the Apple logo appears.
  • On iPhone 7/7 Plus: Press and hold the volume down button and side button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.
  • On iPhone 6s/6s Plus and iPhone SE: Press and hold the home button and power button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears.

5. Update App/Delete App and Reinstall

If Picture-in-Picture isn’t working in a particular app, try updating the app. If you haven’t updated the app for a while, the problem might be caused by the old version. Therefore, go to the App Store and tap on your profile in the upper right corner of the screen. Now, find the app in question and update it.

Update apps on iOS

After updating the app, check if the Picture-in-Picture mode works as intended. If the problem persists, delete the app and reinstall it. A fresh reinstall may help resolve the issue.

6. Reset All Settings

If none of the above-mentioned tricks help fix the Picture-in-Picture mode issue on your iOS 14 device, factory reset your device. While there is no denying the fact that this is a radical solution and you should take the pain out of re-customizing your device settings, this is the best troubleshooter. So don’t miss it.

Hungry Settings app Select on your iPhone and General. Now, scroll down to the bottom and tap on it. Reset. Next, tap on reset all settingsTap , then enter your device passcode (you may also need to enter your Screen Time passcode) to continue.

Reset All Settings on iPhone

Next, a pop-up window will appear from the bottom, “This will reset all settings. No data or media will be deletedTap on ” reset all settings again to confirm that you want to set your device to factory default.

7. Update iPhone Software

Often times, a simple software update can help you overcome a stubborn problem on your iPhone. This is because Apple frequently releases software updates with loads of bug fixes and performance improvements. So even if you couldn’t fix the problem by trying the solutions suggested above, don’t be disappointed as a software update might be the ultimate solution.

Update your iPhone

go Settings app -> General > Software Update and then upgrade your device to the latest iOS version by following the usual steps.

Solutions for Picture-in-Picture Mode Issues on iPhone
